Kanguva to All We Imagine as Light, 5 other Indian films in Oscars 2025 contenders’ list

The 97th Academy Awards (Oscars) is just two months away. Ahead of this, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the list of 323 feature films eligible for this year’s Oscars. Among the 207 films vying for the prestigious Best Picture category, seven Indian films have secured a spot on the list. To everyone’s surprise, Bobby Deol starrer Kanguva is also in Oscars 2025 contenders list.

The Indian films in list include Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) (Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi), Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi-English) and Putul (Bengali). While fans are delighted, a majority of netizens want to know why Kanguva, a box-office bomb, has made it to this esteemed list.

For those unversed, Kanguva starrer Suriya, Bobby Deol and Disha Patani. Within a month of release and a disappointing box office performance, Kanguva took the digital route and arrived on OTT. Despite being one of the most expensive Indian films ever made with a budget of ₹300-350 crore, it raked in ₹106 crore and ended up becoming a dud.

However, Kiran Rao directorial Laapataa Ladies was selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. Unfortunately, the movie could not make it to the shortlist.

Voting for nominations will begin tomorrow, January 8, 2025, and will conclude on January 12, 2025. The final nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The Oscars 2025 ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.
